Opera Companies

By no means all of what's out there -- for that you'd have to visit Operabase, or one of the other sites which post comprehensive listings of opera companies all over the world. I'm just putting up a few of the best known places, or ones that have some sort of personal connection. For more opera links, see my Links page.

United States

  • Metropolitan Opera -- haven't attended a performance here yet, though I've seen the house from the outside (in the off season); someday I'd like to go for a week and attend every performance ...
  • New York City Opera -- and then saunter across the plaza and take in a few more at Avery Fischer.
  • Washington Opera -- I have been here, to see Plácido Domingo in Idomeneo; to read my account of that trip, click here. Now that I'm on their mailing list, I may see if I can get back there for more performances.
  • Los Angeles Opera -- I would have loved to see the world premiere of "Nicholas and Alexandra", but, since I didn't win the lottery, it didn't happen. I regret that the LA Opera didn't exist when I lived in Los Angeles; I'd probably have attended regularly.
  • Minnesota Opera -- my home town house. Most recently seen here: Le Nozze di Figaro, with countertenor Cortez Mitchell as Cherubino.
  • Houston Grand Opera
  • Portland (OR) Opera -- this house sometimes shares productions with Minnesota Opera. And I've got friends in Portland who get to attend, so guess what I'll be doing when I visit them?
  • Oregon Lyric Opera of Portland -- a start-up company, so new it's still raising money, but the plan is to produce opera in English, and to provide training opportunities for youth who are interested in careers in opera.
  • Spokane Opera -- my sister, also an opera fan, lives here, so of course it goes on the list. They're still a little underpowered, but coming on nicely.
  • Seattle Opera -- and Seattle is a nice train ride away from Spokane (and Portland), and has a very good reputation. Another venue on the visiting list!
  • San Francisco Opera -- another must-visit item on my list
  • Chicago Lyric Opera -- within a day's drive of me -- some day I'll get there!
  • Boston Lyric Opera -- don't know much about them, but anything from Boston deserves a look
  • San Diego Opera -- haven't been to San Diego in at least 20 years, but I really liked the place, and maybe a good opera schedule can lure me back.
  • Santa Fe Opera -- I love all sorts of desert -- low, high, and in-between, so this one is definitely in my future, hopefully with Susan Graham on the marquee.

Europe

Canada, Mexico, Central America, South America

Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australia

What, no opera in Antarctica?

Well, maybe. Check this link out and you'll see what I mean >>>
